Dan Smethurst Orthodontist is a leading orthodontic clinic in Tauranga focusing on flexible treatment options for children and adults. In 1990, British-born Dan Smethurst first came to New Zealand to work at the Dental School at the University of Otago. After returning to the UK, Dan gained Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons of England. He then completed a Masters in Orthodontics (with distinction) and a Membership in Orthodontics at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.
Dan and his Tauranga born wife and three boys returned to Tauranga in 2004 and set up the Practice where he is today.
Dan has embraced digital technology in orthodontics. “Digital technology in orthodontics is amazing because it helps us treat our patients better. That means faster and better treatment outcomes. That’s good for everyone. Digital technology allows us to treatment plan our cases more accurately and then speeds up treatment by customising our braces and clear aligners” Customised braces ( Suresmile) and Invisalign is the epitome of how advances in technology can help your treatment and Dan is heavily involved in both. Dan is the only Suresmile provider in the Bay of Plenty and is the biggest Invisalign provider in the Bay also. Dans passion and experience with Invisalign have lead him to be involved with the training of postgraduate Orthodontic students at the University of Otago in the use Invisalign.
Whilst away from work Dan enjoys kitesurfing, surfing, mountain biking and fishing
Cheryl is a registered Dentist from the University of Otago with 15 years of general dental practice experience. Cheryl has been working with Dan in Orthodontics for over 10 years. Cheryl will be involved throughout your orthodontic and Invisalign journey. In her spare time she enjoys walking, reading and spending time with friends and family.
Suzanne has been in the dental industry for nearly 25 years as Practice Manager and now Receptionist. She enjoys her work at the front desk greeting and arranging appointments for the patients. She also loves seeing patients who have completed their treatment and the wide smiles on their faces when they leave. In her spare time she walks, reads and enjoys cooking.
Nealey is a qualified Dental Assistant of eight years. She has recently returned to Dan Smethurst Orthodontics in December 2017. Nealey loves working in orthodontics and seeing the joy on our patients' faces when they reach the end of their treatment. In her spare time she enjoys socialising with friends and family, travelling and walking.
Mikayla has been a Dental Assistant at Dan Smethurst Orthodontics for just over 18 months. She enjoys the digital side of Orthodontics and meeting all the lovely patients. Having had Orthodontic treatment by Dan, she knows what it is like to wear braces and continue with retainers when they come off. In her spare time she enjoys being active, socialising and volunteering for St. John on a frontline ambulance.
Kelly has been in the dental industry for 17 years making the move to Dan Smethurst Orthodontics in 2016. As an adult in treatment, Kelly knows all the ins and outs of braces and is perfect to talk to if you’re an adult seeking orthodontic treatment. She thoroughly enjoys watching our patients' confidence grow as their teeth move and seeing their lovely smiley faces when braces come off. In her spare time she enjoys walking her dog along the beach, tearing down the slopes when skiing and relaxing with friends and family.
Morgan is fairly new to Dan Smethurst Orthodontics. Coming from a teaching background Morgan decided it was time to change career paths and is excited about the new adventure. She is enjoying learning her new role as chairside assistant and getting to know all the lovely patients. In her spare time she likes Mount walks, going to the gym and spending time with her family and friends.
Taryn is fairly new to our practice and is a qualified dental therapist from South Africa. She has considerable knowledge and experience in the dental industry. Taryn has lived in Tauranga for almost three years and enjoys walking, biking and exploring our beautiful scenery with her family in her spare time.
